London Day 4
"Capri-Sonne" aka Capri-Sun. I haven't had one of these since I was a kid. Who knew that they were the modern day Rosetta Stone? |
The Tower of London |
The Tower of London, complete with (now grass-filled) moat |
Christine in front of the Tower of London |
French schoolchildren chasing after Royal Guards to get a picture |
Christine and a Royal Guard in front of the entrance to the building that houses the Crown Jewels |

Our Yeoman Warder |
Traitor's Gate at the Tower of London |
Christine in front of Traitor's Gate |
The Bloody Tower at the Tower of London |
A Yeoman Warder feeding the ravens at the Tower of London. Legend says that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, England will fall. A small community of Ravens is kept here. The Ravens can leave the cage and roam the grounds, but their wings are clipped so they can't fly away. |
Christine taking a picture of the raven cages. |
And old toilet in the Tower of London. This "bathroom" was an overhang from the side of the building, so waste just dropped out the side to a pile below. |
Cool armour (for both a king and his horse) |
Henry VIII's armour; he was a big guy |
Henry VIII's armour |
A Royal Guard marching outside the door to Queens's house (the timber-framed house). The Queen's house was built for Anne Boleyn by Henry VIII as a wedding gift, but she was executed before ever getting to live there. It is now the home of the Governor, a military person appointed by the Queen to be the head of the Tower of London. |
A Royal Guard standing outside the door to Queen's house. Notice the blue doors. All the blue doored buildings in the Tower of London are residences for the Yeoman Warders and their families. How cool would that be, to live in the Tower of London? |
Christine eating an orange at the Tower of London |
Christine still peeling her orange at the Tower of London (it takes her a long time) |
This is the spot where the royal beheadings took place in the Tower of London |
This is the list of all the people beheaded at that spot - 7 people |
Another Yeoman Warder giving a tour as we were leaving the Tower of London. |
These holes are called "murder holes." In the days when castles could be seiged, the doors were made of wood. An opposing army could either ram the doors open or burn them down. If they elected to burn them down, the people in the castle could pour water through these to put out the fire. They could also pour boiling oil down them to kill anyone trying to bust down the doors. |
Christine in front of the statue of Sherlock Holmes on Baker Street |
Christine and Buffy at Madame Tussaud's |
Christine and Buffy at Madame Tussaud's |
Michael and his "favourite" actor, Nicholas Cage at Madame Tussaud's (Mike hates Nicholas Cage, for those who don't know) |
Michael hanging out with John Travolta and Samuel Jackson at Madame Tussaud's |
This is a wax guy...but doens't he look real up close? Several times I would think a wax figure of some actor I didn't know was a real person. In one case, they had a wax figure of someone taking a picture of the stars - I think I ducked under her shot multiple times before Mike pointed out she wasn't real. |
Michael and Jean-Luc Picard at Madame Tussaud's |
Christine and Jean-Luc at Madame Tussaud's |
Hilary, this one's for you - Christine at the table with George Clooney at Madame Tussaud's. The hairy thing at the bottom is someone just ducking out of the picture; for some reason George was very popular, I had to wait in line to get a picture with him. |
Michael chatting with Brad and Angelina at Madame Tussaud's |
Christine yucking it up with Robin Williams at Madame Tussaud's |
Mmmmmm.....fava beans! |
Ahhh...Christine with Remington Steele (or is it James Bond?) at Madame Tussaud's |
Dad, this one's for you....Christine with her almost namesake, John Wayne |
Greg....had to get the King! |
I don't know why Michael wanted his picture with Jacques Chirauc. Maybe he could sense that he probably won't be president of France for very much longer. |
Michael having fun with Yasser Arafat at Madame Tussaud's |
Christine in conference with the Duke of Wellington and Napolean over a game of the Napoleanic Wars; Lord Nelson looks on. |
Christine and Il Papa at Madame Tussaud's |
Michael and Albert Einstein at Madame Tussaud's |
What is Michael doing to Ghandi at Madame Tussaud's? |
Christine has a more conventional pose with Ghandi at Madame Tussaud's |
Christine has a brief meeting with Princess Di at Madame Tussaud's |
Christine and Vincent at Madame Tussaud's (before he lost his ear or else it was re-attatched) |
Christine going down to the "Chamber of Horrors" at Madame Tussaud's |
Heads from the French Revolution in the "Chamber of Horror's" at Madame Tussaud's (not for the faint of heart; these were based on the real heads! Yuck!) |
Garfunkel's - British Denny's where we ate this night |
A better view of the evil Pizza Hut where we ate the first night in London |
Christine on her way to St. Martin's Theatre to see "The Mousetrap" |
Michael and Christine in front of the performance sign for "The Mousetrap" |
